Can I Use Insurance for Sober Living? Everything You Need to Know
TLDR: In many cases people may use insurance benefits towards sober living. If they have a good private plan, such as insurance through their job or insurance benefits from their family, it is quite common that those insurance companies will cover up to 45 days in many cases. The only way to know is to ask. Most sober living and treatment facilities have specialists who know how to speak with insurance companies and what questions to ask.

Did you know?
Insurance companies jobs are to deny your claims and benefits. Unfortunately in the U.S. that is the world we live in. The way you ask for benefits is critical. This is not being sneaky or dishonest this is being professional and shrewd when it comes to YOUR life and YOUR health. You pay for your insurance monthly, often you're paying several hundred dollars monthly or even several thousand dollars monthly for your health coverage and mental health benefits. So don't be bashful or shy when it comes to asking questions. Truly the only stupid questions we ever ask are those we don't say out loud.
Now this doesn't mean that insurance companies are trying to deny all your claims, but many being publicly traded companies, have a goal of maximizing profits. Which means more income and less expenses is necessary. If a CEO does not execute that goal sufficiently, as deemed by the board and the equity share price, they usually end up at the unemployment office. The number one expense of any insurance company in most any industry is benefit payment. So it's not extreme to think that these companies have a goal in minimizing what they cover for me and you.
Which Insurance Plans Typically Cover Sober Living
Besides the most exclusive plans, many people are able to find coverage through Employer EAP programs. What is an Employer EAP programs? In short, it's a direct benefit many employers offer to their employees and, sometimes, employee family members. Normally in confidentiality, this type of benefit is meant to facilitate a healthy and functioning workforce. Sometimes even the brightest and best employees deal with addiction and speed bumps in life. This is typically, although not exclusively, a benefit of the more top tier companies in the US. It is not guaranteed by all businesses in the US by any means but it is also a very good question to ask HR, should the need for such services arise.
What Other Ways Can People Use Insurance Towards Sober Living?
Many insurance also allow people to use benefits towards sober living style programs such as PHP or "partial hospitalization programs". Similar in many aspects to inpatient addiction treatment programs, PHP typically involves an intensive outpatient recovery program that may meet 4 - 7 days a week for typically 5 - 8 hours a day but the patient/client returns to a sober living home in the evenings. Transportation is typically provided by the sober living home and so it very closely reflects an inpatient recovery program and these types of programs are typically covered by most insurances.
How Can I Learn More About My Options for Sober Living and Addiction Treatment?
Besides first speaking to your primary care physician, one can also do some thorough research online these days. Although online research and review reading should be taken with a grain of salt. It should not be used in replacement of doctor advice or doctor orders. Another good means is asking those that "trudged the road of happy destiny" before you. Do you have an AA or NA sponsor?
